Smudging is a simple and effective way to cleanse your home or yourself when performed with intention and care. This ancient practice, originating from Native American traditions, involves purifying a space, person, or object by burning specific herbs. Over time, it has been embraced by various spiritual and religious groups, including healers, feng shui practitioners, and yogis, as a quick and effective method for clearing away negative energies.

With love and care, smudging becomes a powerful method for creating a calm and balanced environment!

Smudging rituals typically use herbs like sage, cedar, and sweetgrass. When these herbs are burned, their smoke is believed to attach to negative energies, carrying them away as the smoke disperses. For those who believe in the presence of negative spirits, the strong aroma of these herbs is thought to drive them away.

Smudging can be used to cleanse homes, offices, altars, and any space that feels heavy or stagnant. It can also benefit individuals who are feeling angry, anxious, unwell, or downhearted, and it can be used to purify objects like crystals, candles, jewellery, and more.

How it works

How to perform cleansing ritual:

  • Set Your Intention: Begin by grounding yourself and setting a clear intention, such as, “My intention is to clear this space of all impurities and invite in light, love, and healing energies.” This step is crucial, as smudging should be done with a calm, positive mindset.

  • Prepare the Space: Open all doors and windows to allow the smoke to carry away negativity. Some people also open cabinets and drawers and switch off electronics.

  • Light the Herbs: If using a smudge stick, light one end until it catches fire, then blow it out so it begins to smoulder. If using loose herbs, light them in a heatproof container, such as an abalone shell, and blow them out. The herbs should emit a steady stream of smoke.

  • Cleanse the Space: Walk through each room, guiding the smoke into all areas—especially corners, closets, and near windows. Use your hand or a feather to wave the smoke while repeating your intention or mantra, visualising any negative energy leaving through the open windows and doors.

  • Cleanse Yourself: After smudging the space, allow the smoke to wash over your body, cleansing away any residual negativity

  • Cleansing People and Objects: For individuals, gently wave the smoke around their body, allowing them to draw it towards their face with their hands. For objects, simply pass them through the smoke or wave the smoke over them.

  • Finish and Seal: Extinguish the smudge stick in water or let it burn out safely. Many people scatter the remaining ash outside for protection.

To complete the ritual, you may light a white candle and walk through your space again, affirming:

“This space is filled with light and love.”
